Neuromuscular & Degenerative Disorders
At Neurolab PT, our goal is to provide the highest level of care and support for those with neurological conditions. We know that everyone’s experience is different, and we are here to walk alongside you every step of the way, making your rehabilitation journey is as successful as possible. Our passionate team of health professionals are here to assist you on your path to recovery
Some forms of Neuromuscular conditions include:
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Muscular Dystrophy (there are many types of MD)
- Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
- Myasthenia Gravis
- Myopathy
- Myositis
- Peripheral Neuropathy
- Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
Neuromuscular disorders affect the nerves in charge of our voluntary muscles and the ones that chat with our brain about what we’re feeling. You can think of nerve cells (neurons) as the texters of the body, sending and receiving electrical messages to help muscles do their thing. But when these neurons stop working properly, the conversation between the brain and muscles gets lost in translation. That’s when the muscles start to lose their strength and shrink away (atrophy).
Numerous neuromuscular conditions exist, and it’s crucial to seek therapy from an experienced team, like Neurolab Physiotherapy.
These conditions lead to gradual muscle weakness and fatigue. Some of them show symptoms from an early age, while others might pop up during childhood or later in life. The specific symptoms vary depending on the type of neuromuscular disorder and which parts of the body they impact
Some symptoms common to neuromuscular disorders include:
- Muscle weakness that can lead to twitching, cramps, aches, pains and loss of joint stability
- Muscle loss (atrophy)
- Movement issues
- Balance problems
- Numbness, tingling or painful sensations
- Double vision
- Trouble swallowing
- Trouble breathing
- Fatigue
Neurodegenerative Disorders
Neurodegenerative disorders primarily target brain cells known as neurons, these cells are specialised for communication between the brain and the body. When these neurons get hurt or die, it results in reduced brain function, leading to issues with either movement or cognitive abilities.
The signs of neurodegenerative disorders differ based on which parts of the brain are impacted. Some of these disorders primarily lead to issues related to movement (known as ataxias), while others primarily bring about difficulties in cognitive functions (referred to as dementias).
Here are some of the most common neurodegenerative disorders:
- Alzheimer’s Disease: This type of dementia primarily affects mental functions, especially memory.
- Parkinson’s Disease: It results from the degeneration of specific neurons, causing difficulties in controlling body movements.
- Motor Neurone Disease: This group of diseases leads to the degeneration and death of neurons controlling muscles, resulting in muscle control loss and, eventually, paralysis.
- Huntington’s Disease: This inherited neurodegenerative disorder affects both movement and cognitive functions.
Most neurodegenerative disorders typically develop later in life and have a progressive nature, meaning they cause increasing disability over time.
Our promise is to deliver exceptional, personalised holistic care.
